The eco-design of our shoulder bags

As you know, Nodie's is an eco-responsible leather goods brand. But to achieve this eco-responsible manufacturing model, we had to think about centralizing an entire local ecosystem around our workshop in order to reduce the impact on the carbon footprint.

A region specializing in luxury leather shoes

We are uniquely fortunate that Romans-sur-Isère remains the capital of luxury footwear, despite a crisis in the footwear market that saw the largest shoemaker in Romans, Charles Jourdan, disappear a few years ago. In recent years, leather goods giants have established themselves in the region, gradually replacing the large shoemaking workshops.

The LVMH group, and in particular Louis Vuitton, has set up several sites in Drôme , and numerous subcontractors have begun to grow.

It was among one of these luxury subcontractors that Tine Collard learned her trade !

Leather goods have become an integral part of our beautiful Drôme and Tine, with her 9 years of experience, has brought together a real network of toolmakers, who today support her in the Nodie's adventure.

So, as you may have already discovered for several of our models, it was easy to find local suppliers and toolmakers.

As the months went by, we realized that it was possible to minimize our impact on the carbon footprint by sourcing locally with leather, but also jeans, and of course by manufacturing locally as well.

Nodie's has succeeded in the challenge of manufacturing leather goods in an eco-responsible manner by using all these levers, ranging from local sourcing to local manufacturing and also including eco-responsible materials such as upcycled leather and salmon leather.

With a carbon footprint of less than 6kg of CO2, it is a leader among responsibly manufactured bags.

The challenge: offering an affordable price, while still manufacturing high-end products with leather and remaining eco-responsible.

By favoring this short and local circuit, we have found that we have reduced our transport costs and despite more expensive manufacturing linked to French labor, we compensate for this with this local ecosystem. And the current crisis linked to the war in Ukraine has reinforced us in our mission, since in a few months, transport costs have exploded!

Not only does our manufacturing cost, which is higher than European or Chinese manufacturing, gradually compensate for the difference thanks to this exponential increase, but we are also acting directly on the carbon footprint.

Producing cleaner and manufacturing in France, that is the real challenge.

French leather, French jeans, French fish leather.

For our previous bags (Ruben love and Andy), we had already used leather and jeans from Romans sur Isère, but for this bag we wanted to go further in French sourcing. And we thought about developing our metal clasp also in France and if possible in the region.

A metal piece based on a local French collaboration

After a meeting between Nodie's and the metal company EAC , it was decided to work on a 3D printed clasp project using a brand new technology. This was not an easy challenge to overcome, required several attempts and slightly delayed the release of our jewel.

The difficulty was also being able to maintain a balanced price so as not to have too much impact on the overall manufacturing price.

It's done, but we had to make concessions, because our desire to create a bag with mainly local sourcing implies more expensive materials , so our new bag will not be able to be distributed in stores , because by adding the store margin, the price increases significantly and our desire is to offer an affordable price.

Our satisfaction is that on this leather bag, only the metal straps and the chain come from Italy.

Isaac, an original leather shoulder bag for women with a very rock design

After creating tote bags, Nodie's goal was to offer a mini shoulder bag for women who wanted a bag that could be worn like a piece of jewelry. The current trend is toward small bags, which are becoming true fashion accessories.

Tine Collard has therefore designed a bag with a minimalist format that allows you to slip in a smartphone and essentials like a small wallet and keys, and your lipstick, the essential!

But to stand out from the others, it was necessary to imagine a unique shape and design.

After having designed a first, more sober model, with a conventional rectangular shape, she decided to work on a flared shape and a flap that covers part of the bag but not all of it.

This design presented at the Mif show in Paris was a hit.

Style details for a future iconic handbag?

Finally, it was necessary to give a style to this bag and as you know, Nodie's offers a beautiful anthracite finish on all its metal parts, which are one of the distinctive signs of the brand.

We chose to combine a chain and small bridges and to add the clasp in the same finish to give a very rock style to this bag, and to break away from the conventional.

This is what we call in current fashion: An It bag (it’s the bag we want to have!)

In our desire for eco-responsible and sustainable leather goods , upcycled leather has become a staple in our entire collection, and salmon leather made from food waste is also starting to appear.

So for this It Bag, salmon leather also stands out with its style and character. Tine decided to play with colors and offers tone-on-tone salmon leather, or contrasting ones like the black Isaac version and its magnificent royal blue fish leather.

After being presented at the Made in France trade fair, where it generated a huge amount of enthusiasm, it was highly anticipated and since the first photo appeared on social media last week, the reactions have been even more numerous.
