As you may have discovered, we have started offering our Squama collection, which is a mix of calfskin and marine leather (salmon).
Nodie's loves originality: after choosing to use upcycled leather from Adapta Paris in 2019 when it was created ( upcycling was still little seen at the time and has now become more widespread in the increasingly frequent approach of leather goods manufacturers regarding the impact on the environment), Tine decided to take an interest in marine leather, this new innovation.

Historically, fish leather appeared during the 16th century, where there are some historical mentions of it, but it was quickly replaced by the use of other materials.
But its big comeback in Europe took place in Iceland in 1994 where the first tanning of fish skins resumed.
Several fish (perch, salmon, trout, bass, sturgeon) were used.
In 2020, awareness of the reuse of waste resurfaced and little by little several companies in France began to tan fish.
Ictyos, a startup specializing in marine leather.
Developed by the young Start UP Ictyos and its 3 talented chemists, fish leather is experiencing a boom with a superb finish similar to luxurious crocodile or snake skins.
Their approach: ICTYOS combines the traditional know-how of a French tannery with an eco-responsible approach by transforming fish skins from the food industry into very high-quality marine leathers.
With an innovative process, Benjamin Malatrait and his two partners began to work on a more advanced tanning technique and aimed to produce between 1,000 and 2,000 skins per week.
Since then, Ictyos has experienced a boom in the fish leather tanning market and offers many leather goods manufacturers beautiful hides with superb colors. Ictyos' ambition is to become a leader in this European market and is responsible for working in an eco-responsible way by developing new vegetable tanning techniques.

The most important thing in the eyes of Nodie's and many leather goods manufacturers is the eco-responsible approach of this company.
Indeed, respect for strong commitments: recycling of marine skins, no breeding for skin and no endangered species in order to guarantee biodiversity. 
Plus Ictyos by recovering fish skins has no impact on increasing fishing, and favors vegetable tannins composed of leaves,
of roots or fruits to minimize the impact on deforestation.

Since this leather is made from food waste and only undergoes vegetable tanning and dyeing, the price of the hides is relatively low, which generally places it below exotic leathers.
Furthermore, it is a real pleasure for leather goods designers, since depending on the fish they can focus on making small leather goods such as bracelets, card holders, or larger pieces such as bags which can be entirely made of fish leather in small models, or with a mixture of calfskin and fish leather like our latest Isaac bag.
Finally, the price will vary depending on the colors, and designer workshops will be able to innovate with texture mixes to produce top-quality, original, trendy fashion accessories that can be found even in beautiful luxury boutiques.
Salmon leather is a natural choice for the French leather goods brand Nodie's.
As you will have noticed, they are joining the commitment through which Tine has been involved for months for Nodie's, namely, using materials from our own consumer waste and limiting the impact on the carbon footprint.
So following the meeting with Ictyos, the idea of testing this salmon leather became obvious, to create a range mixing upcycled calfskin and marine leather in order to offer accessories: Card holder , belt and wallets.
Other leather goods brands are attracted by this leather, and Ictyos, which has joined the ADC structure, a renowned incubator, puts Ictyos in contact with numerous leather professionals in order to demonstrate the interest of this type of skin.
